We are storyboard artists in animation. During the course of production millions of sketches are produced. Some are used but most are not. These are the ones that "got away" and scribbly scribbles deemed not worthy for prime time.
I have an English Bulldog named Pogo. He's a big, friendly oaf. One of the things that always frustrated me about cartoon bulldogs are for tyhe most part just re-treads and rip-offs of the Preson Blair bulldog, drawn without ever actually looking at a real bulldog. You can caricature them a bunch of different ways, if you just look at them.
Drawn while talking to Bobopoly this morning. It bears no resemblance to what we were actually talking about but I guess it's an insight to what sickness resides in my subconscious. Next stop, insane asylum!! Brush pen and grey markers.
Here is what happened: Ken Bruce drew a brutal caricature of me in a meeting yesterday. True to form, my response was to draw an even uglier version of myself. Our head of story said that Ken's drawing reminded him of that creepy vetigal twin in "Total Recall". That was all I needed to hear. I think Vestigal twins are neat.
So I went to the Star Wars exibit at the California Science Center this past Sunday. It was cool to see all of the props and costumes from the movies, like the full-sized and and miniature model of Luke's landspeeder (Obi Wan has no legs!!!)
and the HUGE Millenium Falcon and x-wing. Geektopia for sure. I was shooting some digital pics when I remembered reading somewhere that when they built the Rebel Blockade Runner the modelers put a special surprise in the cockpit. So I bent down, snapped this shot and guess what I saw....
There's a joke here somewhere. Any suggestions?
And now for this commercial break...
It was a fun exhibit and I highly reccomend it. Just plan for long lines. The funny thing was that there were more adults than children!
Some stuff from my sketchbook. These are exploaration sketches for the story I'm doing for Afterworks 3. Chippy has a big fight in the story. What else is new?
See this is what I'm talking about right here. This is an example of those bits of magic you just throw away and it never sees the light of day??? Probably ending up in the shredder even? Well I rescued this baby yesterday when Bobopoly tossed it in the recycle bin after a screening. Ha! The ghost of scribbles past coming back to haunt you! They're too good to throw away right?
I was watching a few of the John Hodgman clips on Comedy Central.com and I said to myself,"Wow, John Hodgeman has a big head!" So I had to draw it. BTW he's also the PC guy on the Mac commercials if you've been living under a rock for the past few months.
When I was a kid growing up in Denver, the local independant station used to run the old George Reeves "Superman" show monday through friday at 4:30. I loved that show. That was the show that got me into "Superman". Reeves was a great Superman. What he lacked in muscles he more than made up for with attittude, style and solid acting. Best Superman ever. Anyway, he was on my mind while I was doodling the other day.
So I'm back from a month long hiatus. Ahhhh. Back to the ol' drawing board. It's funny how you forget how to draw after a vacation. So here's a warm up to get back into the new year and a new project. Story's done on the old one and time to switch gears. It's hard. Soooo hard. Why? Why? Why?
Enjoy and I hope the new year brings you laughs, love and most of all money. Yes I said money. If that happens come over and pick me up and we'll head over to the arcade an put a few quarters up on Defender. Or maybe Robotron. None of this DDR or GuitarMan junk.
It was a year ago on the 13th that Skribble started this blog and invited us to be a part of it. It was concieved as a way for us to blow off steam and show what we could do outside the confines of our jobs as story artists at a feature animation company. I for one would like to thank skribble for introducing me to the world of blogging. I had no idea it would be this fun or this rewarding. I'd also like to thank all of the folks who make this a regular stop and have linked to us. Keep coming back, and we'll keep posting drawings and things to look at. Here's to another year! -John "Robotaekwon-z" Sanford
I drew this in a meeting. My mind was wandering. I have no idea what sort of dinosaur this is supposed to be. It's based on a roadside mascot I saw waaaay back in 1976 in DinosaurLand in Vernal, Utah. during a family car trip. They sold little plastic fugurines of the dinosaur. Fun little cartoony ones. I wish I still had it.
A big dragon-y, dinosaur-y, crazy creature? I would have made the wings bigger, but I ran out of room on the sheet of animation paper. Like many of my drawings, this one just started and I didn't know where it would go. It ended up here. I want to try to put it up in full color soon. I just had to put something up. We've all been letting skribbl carry the burden of keeping this blog alive too much lately. Of course a lot of people on this blog are working hard on the upcoming movies. It's slowed down for me at the holidays, so I had no excuse. Whee, drawing is fun!
I did this at work while I was taking a break from drawing on the Cintiq. I sketched it fast with an ordinary #2 pencil and inked it quikly with a Copic brush marker. I did these as kind of a preparation for the "Afterworks 3" story I'm going to do. I'm trying to nail down Chippy's design. I hope I can get Chippy to look consistantly this good in the story.
Work has been S-L-O-W. So slow that I got the chance to clean up my room, dust off the gouache and play a little. I haven't painted in three years so I'm a starting out simple. Mmmm. Love the smell of gouache. (it tastes good too!)
In both cases I started with plain illustration board and no preconcieved ideas. Just laying down the paint and seeing what happened.
EDIT: I just added another one but noticed that he has dangly bits. Oops. They're supposed to be those things that stick out on power transformers. Oh well.
